As lieutenant commander, named chief medical officer of U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701) under Captain James T. Kirk, 2266. Served with distinction, devising innovative medical procedures such as treating injury to silicon-based life form with contstruction plaster. In 2267, apparently killed while on the "Shore Leave" planet but the recovered fully from injuries with planetΓÇÖs advanced technology. In 2268, diagnosed with xenopolycythemia, an incurable terminal illness. Resigned commission, married Natira, High Priestess of the Yonadan people. The computer archives of Yonada discovered to contain a cure for the disease; cured, McCoy returned to Starfleet service.
In 2270, retired to private medical practice. Recalled to duty by Admiral Kirk in 2271 under Starfleet reactivation clause; promoted to commander and named chief medical officer of refit U.S.S. Enterprise for V'Ger mission.
In 2285 as Academy medical faculty and training instructor, was aboard training vessel Enterprise when it was pressed into active service to deal with the Genesis Crisis; following the mission, detained by Starfleet Security over leaks pertaining to top-secret Genesis Project.
Assisted Admiral James T. Kirk in theft of Enterprise from spacedock, 2285. Discovered to have received "katra" or spirit of then-deceased Captain Spock. McCoy fled with Kirk and crewmates to planet Vulcan. There, SpockΓÇÖs katra successfully re-integrated with his regenerated body. McCoy et al. remained in exile on Vulcan until 2286. Returned to Earth with shipmates in stolen Klingon bird-of-prey, and participated in time-travel mission to rescue Earth from alien probe of unknown origin.
Cleared of all charges and returned to active duty by the Federation Council, 2286. Served aboard Starship Enterprise-A under Captain Kirk. Participated in Nimbus III mission, 2287. In 2293, participated in Khitomer peace mission; wrongly convicted of assassinating Klingon High Chancellor Gorkon, imprisoned on Klingon Rura Penthe gulag. Rescued and subsequently acquitted.
From 2293-2307, served as director of Starfeet Medical School; promoted to captain in 2295. Promoted to admiral in 2308 and appointed by the Federation Council as the Surgeon General of The United Federation of Planets. Served from 2308-40. Retired in 2340 to private life in Mississippi. In 2364, as a retired admiral, gave an inspection tour of Galaxy-class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D upon its departure from McKinley Station.
